AdoptIUWM

Adopting Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) in Indian cities

2013 - 2016

Coordinated by the ICLEI South Asia Secretariat 7 pilot actions were implemented which demonstrate alternative low cost approaches for closing the urban water loop. These were:
- in Solapur (Maharashtra): revival of abandoned handpumps and revival of defunct community toilet;
- in Ichalkaranji (Maharashtra): closing the water loop at the level of a slum;
- in Kishangarh (Rajasthan): waste management in two wards and closing the water loop at the level of a school;
- in Jaisalmer (Rajasthan): waste management in two wards and revival of a traditional pond/rain water harvesting structure.

Key output of the project has been a step-by-step Toolkit to guide Indian cities towards making IUWM part of their urban planning and management process. The Toolkit explains how local governments can assess the existing level of integration of their water sector, develop a water vision and formulate targets. Cities can also learn how to come up with an action plan together with the community and prioritise activities for implementation.

In April 2015,  a one-week exposure visit to Zaragoza (Spain), Iper, Harelbeke and Koksijde (Belgium) as well as Gladbeck and Essen (Germany) was organised together with the ICLEI European Secretariat and the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities - both partners of the AdoptIUWM project - in order to introduce representatives of the participating Indian cities to best practices in the field of IUWM being undertaken in Europe.
