Awards

ICLEI Europe recognises and celebrates towns and cities demonstrating outstanding contributions and commitment to excellence and leadership in sustainability. We do this through hosting our own awards and also being members of the jury for national and European-wide awards. As an organisation we have also picked up a few awards along the way!

Showcasing excellence in sustainability

ICLEI Europe hosts two annual awards:

The Transformative Action Award

The Transformative Action Award, co-organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the City of Aalborg (Denmark), with support from the European Committee of the Regions and the European Investment Bank, is given to a city, region or civil society organisation that uses the 15 pathways outlined in the Basque Declaration to catalyse a socio-cultural, socio-economic or technological transformation in their community, in addition to furthering the implementation of the European Green Deal at local level.

The actions taken reflect local or regional contributions to the implementation of international goals and commitments, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Climate Agreement and more. The competition is open to any local or regional authority, or civil society organisation located in an EU Member State, EEA country or EU candidate or accession country that has endorsed the Mannheim Message.

Procura+ Awards

The Procura+ Awards draw attention to sustainable, circular and innovation procurements and tender procedures, and give visibility to the most dynamic, forward-looking and innovative public authorities and their initiatives. The winners of the Procura+ Awards have strong potential for replication and scaling-up and are excellent sources of inspiration for any public authority using procurement instruments to purchase cutting edge solutions.

The Procura+ Awards recognise outstanding achievements in three categories:

  1. Sustainable Procurement of the Year - This category will reward procurements which integrate aspects of sustainability, including environmental, economic, circular and social elements. It aims to showcase procurements which include a strategic and therefore holistic approach to implementing public procurement.
  2. Innovation Procurement of the Year - This category will reward those procurements which use innovative approaches in their purchasing practices, as well as those that foster innovation by purchasing cutting-edge products, services and works and see the public authority as a launch customer, driving sustainable development.
  3. Procurement Initiative of the Year - This category will focus on outstanding public procurement initiatives, such as programmes, policies, actions, guidance and tools that contribute towards strategic, sustainable, circular and innovative procurement.
