Global Town Hall at the UN Rio+20 conference

13 - 22 June 2012
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio+20 builds on milestone UN conferences such as the Stockholm Environment Summit in 1972, the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, and the 2002 Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development – it is a rare and potentially historic opportunity for the global community.

The Rio+20 Global Town Hall was the space to discuss the urban future in the lead up to and during the Rio+20 conference; an arena for presentations, dialogues and debates. It was convened by ICLEI and run together with a wide range of partners including the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development.

With a thematic focus on the Green Urban Economy within the context of sustainable development, the Global Town Hall connected decision makers and political city leaders with leaders from national government, the UN, the private sector and global civil society, to discuss the sustainable urban future.
