ICLEI Europe’s commitment to accelerating clean, inclusive and sustainable energy transitions across Europe will be showcased at an interactive stand during this year’s European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) in Brussels.

For the first time in two years, EUSEW will return in-person - in addition to scheduling online activities for participants - on 26 September. The ICLEI stand will feature a number of innovative energy projects with topical focuses including just energy transitions, climate neutral and smart cities, harnessing the power of green data, making building stock more energy efficient, and much more.

Staff from ICLEI Europe will be available to discuss ICLEI’s work and to emphasise the transformative power of local governments in cultivating a sustainable energy future. Specific project achievements and outputs will also be on display for participants to interact with.

26 September - A social energy transition

CINTRAN: Regions that economically depend on fossil fuel extraction or energy-intensive industries will be disproportionately affected by the decarbonisation of industry and the economy. The CINTRAN project studies the complex patterns and dynamics of structural change in those carbon-intensive regions across Europe. It examines the pace of transformation and the regions’ capacity to cope and adapt proactively through highly integrated, inter- and transdisciplinary research working in close collaboration with regional stakeholders from four highly fossil-fuel dependent regions: Western Macedonia (Greece), Silesia (Poland), Ida-Virumaa (Estonia) and the Rhenish mining area (Germany).

DECIDE: DECIDE is a Horizon 2020 project that aims to gain a better understanding of how energy communities and energy efficiency services are established and managed. It also intends to identify which kind of communications and interactions work best to encourage participation in energy communities for specific types of individuals and groups, and to test and transfer knowledge in pilot projects across Europe.

EC2: Gathering insights from the fields of law, economics and psychology, EC² will provide answers on how to facilitate and strengthen energy citizenship. Knowledge co-creation with municipalities, energy communities and citizens will enhance the research to deliver recommendations that support the EU’s energy and decarbonisation goals. The project will develop a clear conceptualisation of energy citizenship, and gather actionable insights into the optimal conditions for it to flourish. It places a special focus on the role of energy communities and how their set-up can help - or hinder - the creation of energy citizens.

Sun4All: Through the Sun4All project approach, four European ‘pilot cities’ aim at facilitating access to renewable energy generation (and its economic and environmental benefits) for vulnerable households, which suffer from energy poverty and which otherwise would not have the capacity of investing in solar installations. At each pilot location (Almada (PT), Barcelona (ES), Rome (IT), and the Community of Communes Cœur de Savoie (FR)), eligible participants will be identified and invited to be part of the project.

SONNET: SONNET brought diverse groups together to make sense of how social innovation can bring about a more sustainable energy system in Europe. How has social innovation contributed to making our energy sources, use, and production cleaner? How can social change help reduce our carbon footprint in the future? Six cities and six research institutions in Europe made use of techniques – like ‘City Labs’, case studies, citizen surveys and more – to figure out how we can help make sure that social innovations accelerate the transition from the use of fossil fuels to a more sustainable energy system.

27 September - Climate neutral and smart cities

NetZeroCities: NetZeroCities (NZC) is part of the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme in support of  European Union’s Green Deal. NZC has been designed to help cities overcome the current structural, institutional and cultural barriers they face in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. NZC will support the EU’s Mission of “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” newly-launched as part of the Horizon Europe programme. The project will work as a service-oriented platform supported by world-class practitioners. It will help European cities by providing them with the support and solutions they need to achieve their Net Zero goal in a socially inclusive way.

RUGGEDISED: RUGGEDISED is a smart city project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. It brings together three lighthouse cities: Rotterdam, Glasgow and Umeå and three fellow cities: Brno, Gdansk and Parma to test, implement and accelerate the smart city model across Europe. Working in partnership with businesses and research centres these six cities will demonstrate how to combine ICT, e-mobility and energy solutions to design smart, resilient cities for all. This means improving the quality of life of citizens, reducing the environmental impact of activities and creating a stimulating environment for sustainable economic development.

28 September - Making building stock energy efficient

Act!onHeat: The objectives of Act!onHeat are to further disseminate and take up the concept and methods for strategic Heating and Cooling (H&C) planning, increase its quality and to push the development and implementation of identified measures. To reach these goals Act!onHeat will implement the following activities: (i) identify the success factors of strong and efficient existing H&C plans and develop a workflow for strategic H&C planning and project development based on the existing open source tools Hotmaps and THERMOS, (ii) support at least 120 municipalities in strategic H&C planning and the development of at least 30 pre-feasibility studies for related individual projects with a mix of tailored individual and group support activities, (iii) train stakeholders who can actively contribute to decarbonisation in the use of workflows, processes and tools through a dedicated training programme, and (iv) leverage additional impact with a mix of Europe-wide roadshow events, acceleration dialogues, webinars and further promotional activities.

BuiltHub: “Dynamic EU building stock knowledge hub - BuiltHub" is a 4-year European Project funded under the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union. The project seeks to develop a roadmap to continuously enhance the data needed to decide on building-related policy and business for involved stakeholders through a community and its data hub. It seeks to positively disrupt policy and market decision-making through a continuously community-enhanced evidence base.

EXCESS: EXCESS - FleXible user-CEntric Energy poSitive houseS – brings together 21 partners from 8 countries to showcase how nearly-zero energy buildings can be transformed into positive energy buildings (PEBs). Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme over a 4-year period, EXCESS will spearhead four innovative demonstration projects, introducing technical solutions that enable buildings to produce more renewable energy than they consume over the course of a year. By implementing demonstration projects that span across the Nordic, Continental, Oceanic and Mediterranean climate zones, EXCESS seeks to test, validate and share PEB solutions with potential replicability across Europe.

MATRYCS: MATRYCS aims to combine existing modern technological breakthroughs in the areas of machine learning, deep learning and big data in order to develop a new decision-making and data analysis solution for energy-efficient building. It will do this through the creation of an AI-powered framework. The overall vision of MATRYCS is to develop a Reference Architecture for Buildings Data exchange, management and real-time processing, and to translate this reference architecture into an Open, Cloud-based Data Analytics Toolbox (MATRYCS Modular Toolbox).

29 September - How cities can use data in their green transition

ePlanet: ePLANET will facilitate and ease the deployment of coordinated energy transition actions by the public sector. The project will use the most innovative tools in artificial intelligence and big data together with an innovative clustering governance to boost Energy Transition Plans at the municipal level. Besides, it will foster the digitalisation of energy data available in dispersed data sources, of the energy transition measures and of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs), enabling an ecosystem of data and tools to support decision-making on energy transition.

Google EIE: ICLEI Europe and Google have been working together to better understand how the Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) tool – created by Google in collaboration with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) – can support cities in bolstering local climate action and in achieving their local carbon reduction goals. The following is an Overview for European Policymakers.

MICAT: MICAT – Multiple Impacts Calculation Tool – is a project that aims to develop a comprehensive approach to estimate Multiple Impacts of Energy Efficiency (MI-EE) by co-creating a free, easy-to-use, scientifically sound online tool (MICATool). The MICATool will enable holistic analyses of MI-EE at the European, national and local level to strengthen the climate strategy of the Energy Union and accelerate an affordable and just, sustainable energy transition by addressing the challenges and needs of important target groups: policy makers, practitioners and evaluators.
