New Secretariat of the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition

20 June 2019, 11:00 - 12:30
Brussels, Belgium- Résidence Palace, Passage

No region should be left behind in the transition towards a low carbon economy and society. The Platform for Coal Regions in Transition of the European Commission supports coal regions to take on the challenge of the clean energy transition by:

  • Building capacity through needs-oriented technical assistance, focusing on key areas of the transition process;
  • Developing support materials, toolkits, guidelines, and reports focusing on issues such as governance, environmental rehabilitation, employment, financing, clean air, and new technologies;
  • Connecting stakeholders and facilitating dialogue among regions and the wider stakeholder community.

At EUSEW, the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition will present the activities of its newly established Secretariat. Representatives from the European Commission will take stock on the progress made by EU coal regions in recent months and explain how the Platform supports a clean and fair transition in the context of the Clean Energy for All Europeans Package, and the EU’s Long Term Strategy ‘A Clean Planet for All’.

During a panel discussion, representatives from the European Commission, coal regions and key stakeholders will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the transition to a low carbon economy for EU coal regions and the role of the Platform in assisting the process.

The European Commission believes that all sectors should contribute to a clean and fair transition and we welcome people from all spheres to participate in the session. We will open the floor for audience’s contributions, and invite them to engage and support the transition of coal regions and the Platform.
