Sustainable Public Procurement in Schools as Catalysts for Food System Change

22 March 2023, 14:00 - 17:00
1000 Bruxelles, Belgium- Rue du Luxembourg 19-21

Local governments providing public meals can be levers for change working towards sustainable food systems. This conference will focus on school meals, convening panels of policy and legal experts on school food procurement, demonstrating that procuring sustainable school meals is a relatively small action that can help to achieve implementation of the EU Farm to Fork strategy.

A group of EU-funded initiatives – namely the COACH and SchoolFood4Change projects, and the Buy Better Food campaign – invites public procurers, policy-makers, food system experts and civil society organisations to join this discussion of best practices, the upcoming Sustainable Food Systems Law, and minimum mandatory criteria for public school food procurement.

Following inspirational keynote addresses, two different project approaches and a variety of good practice examples in delivering healthy and sustainable school meals will be presented.

Panel discussions on the procurement of sustainable school meals (in light of the upcoming EU Sustainable Food Systems law), and on minimum procurement standards for public school canteens will round-out the conference.

The event will be followed by a light aperitivo.

This event is free of charge, but places are limited and registration is required. Registration for the event will close when the places have been filled and the venue reaches the maximum capacity. As such, early registration is recommended.
