ICLEI European Convention 2011

Cities in Europe 2020 - Enhance Sustainability Now!

12 - 14 September 2011
Brussels, Belgium

The ICLEI European Convention 2011 was a challenging and thought-provoking event that addressed both ICLEI members and the many European cities that want to make a difference by creating a sustainable society.

This engaging event took place in Brussels and allowed participants to discuss sustainable actions with peers and representatives from the European institutions, discover the exhibition "Brussels - sustainable city", explore the Hamburg European Green Capital 2011 "Train of Ideas" and follow up on the outcomes of the last ESCT Conference in Dunkerque.

During the Convention, municipalities from across Europe came together to release the ICLEI European Convention Declaration, calling for greater support and recognition of their contribution to the creation of an economically smart, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable Europe.

Participants were addressed by politicians, senior officials from ICLEI European member cities, internationally renowned experts and prestigious representatives from EU institutions and other Brussels-based organisations. How to pursue the appropriate balance between growth and sustainability and deliver low carbon, climate resilient and sustainable cities by 2020 was the central theme of the convention.
