The conference brought participants together to discuss how regions can successfully make the transformation to sustainable energy, with a view to achieveing energy self sufficiency. The ecological, economic, technical and social factors that must be considered in establishing sustainable energy were examined in detail.

The general ambition was to stimulate discussion within different disciplinary fields about the transformation of the energy system and go beyond disciplinary boundaries for the facilitation of an inter- and transdisciplinary approach to Renewable Energy Self-Sufficiency.

The event was hosted by the Renewable Energy Regions (RE Regionen) project in cooperation with the Centre for Renewable Energy (ZEE, University of Freiburg), the University of Hohenheim and the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW, Berlin).
