On 6 December 2021, the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health will present key messages from a project addressing the environmental and health aspects of redeveloping contaminated sites. In addition, the launch of the WHO Planning brief on protecting health through the urban redevelopment of contaminated sites will look at how such urban renewal projects can be effectively coordinated by local authorities.

Contaminated sites pose a significant threat to health and affect land use and urban planning in all countries of the WHO European Region. Redevelopment of such sites is essential in order to protect local populations from environmental risks and health threats and to release land resources to improve the development of healthier cities.

Main topics and target audience
The WHO planning brief summarizes the key messages of the project and compiles the lessons learned across Europe on the redevelopment of contaminated sites as part of urban planning and renewal interventions. Specifically, it aims to present

how health and environmental impacts can be considered during redevelopment; and useful practices to support the effective, healthy and sustainable redevelopment of contaminated sites.
The key messages of the planning brief are of interest to both national and local governments, decision-makers on environment and health, urban planners and practitioners, researchers, and civil society organizations.
