ICLEI’s Local Action Counter passes 300 cities mark

Over 300 cities from around the world have registered with ICLEI’s Local Action Counter, each city joining a growing list of urban areas working towards a sustainable future. This global initiative seeks to show world leaders that cities are key to getting our planet back on track and building a just, sustainable and secure future for all. The tool also counts down the days until the Rio+20 conference as a reminder of the urgent need to take action.

Tallin (Estonia), Cape Town (South Africa), Kiev (Ukraine) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) are present in the counter, along with other cities from around the globe. Over fifty countries are now in the counter, with Europe by far the best represented. So far Spain is leading with 22 cities, followed by the United Kingdom with 20. To be a success the counter needs to be truly international, and nations in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas are encouraged to get active and add their cities.

Websites and blogs can embed the counter in a matter of moments, demonstrating their commitment to international sustainability by giving cities more opportunities to be added. The Rio+20 conference takes place from 4-6 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and aims to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development. ICLEI is acting as Local Authority Major Group Organizing Partner, coordinating the input and participation of Local Authorities at the conference.
