Glasgow gears up for electric transport

ICLEI member Glasgow (United Kingdom) has joined the e-mobility revolution by acquiring its first fleet of electric, zero emission vehicles. The trial is part of the United Kingdom’s new Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator initiative, a project estimated to be worth £25m. The cars will be used during the council staff’s daily work.

An initial fleet of 10 Peugeot eExpert cars, will be followed in September by 30 Peugeot ePartners. The vehicles have been provided to Glasgow City Council by Allied Electric. The cars have a battery range of between 80 and 100 miles and top speeds of 65 mph.

It is hoped that the trial will gather enough information to make a judgment on the long-term viability of such a project. Meanwhile, Glasgow City Council intends to have city-wide charging points in operation and available to electric car owners by 2011.
