Join the One Planet City Challenge!

Cities and towns in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are invited to participate in the One Planet City Challenge. This Challenge is run by WWF in collaboration with ICLEI, the Global Covenant of Mayors, C40 and CDP. The initiative aims to mobilise and support cities as they act on the Paris Agreement.

The goal of the Challenge is to support and celebrate 100 cities with actions plans to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2020. The Challenge acts as a “friendly competition” to encourage municipal ambition in fighting climate change.

Once cities have chosen to join the Challenge, they will be required to report relevant data with guidance from WWF. Participating cities will report on emissions, goals and targets using a standardised reporting platform – namely the CDP Cities platform, which is CDP and ICLEI’s new unified reporting system.

Data will be assessed and compared in order to help ensure that actions limit global warming to 1.5°C, and cities will receive expert guidance and information regarding the most impactful actions to be taken.

Based on data entered, three finalist cities per country will be selected and invited to participate in the global public engagement campaign, “We Love Cities.” Finally, national winners and one global winner will be chosen and celebrated at an international award ceremony.

A number of ICLEI Members have previously been named national winners, including Brussels (Belgium), Copenhagen (Denmark), Lahti and Lappeenranta (Finland), and Gothenburg, Stockholm and Umeå (Sweden).

ICLEI Members are once again urged to join this year's One Planet City Challenge! To do so, contact your local WWF representative, or email opcc@wwf.se. The deadline to sign-up for the Challenge is 10 July.
