On 9 May, the winners of International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Awards were announced, and ICLEI members were among the distinguished winners.

The project CIVITAS PORTIS won in the category of ‘Community Outreach: addressing externalities’. CIVITAS PORTIS is coordinated by ICLEI Member Antwerp (Belgium), with the participation of the Port of Antwerp, ICLEI Member Aberdeen (United Kingdom), and the cities of Constanta (Romania), Klaipėda (Lithuania), Trieste (Italy), and Ningbo (China).

The project is a collaboration between port cities aiming to foster more sustainable mobility with respect to both private commuting and public transport infrastructure and logistics.

Participating cities act as ‘living labs’, testing various solutions that all hold cooperation, innovation and knowledge-sharing as key tenets. Some such solutions include low-emission passenger transport over water, improving cycle infrastructure, and increasing the share of public transport that runs on electric power.

The Port of Antwerp was doubly recognised at the IAPH Awards, both for their role in CIVITAS PORTIS, and as the winner in the ‘Safety and Security’ category for their Port of Antwerp PIN project.

The World Ports Sustainability Programme was launched in March 2018, making these the first ever IAPH Sustainability Awards. These awards seek to recognise best practices in sustainability among global ports, so that practices may be replicated by others and ultimately mainstreamed.
