ICLEI deliver speech at UN Climate Talks

ICLEI got involved at last week’s UN Climate Talks, delivering a joint intervention alongside United Cities and Local Government (UCLG). The intervention highlighted the danger that without proper recognition of the role of cities and local governments, it may be difficult for national governments to reach effective conclusions at the next United Nations Conference, to be held in Cancún (Mexico).

ICLEI and UCLG spoke at both the opening and closing of the Climate Talks. Other topics addressed in their interventions included cities and local governments' plan to launch their global response for measurable, reportable, verifiable local climate action, which will take place on 21 November 2010 in Mexico City.

The Climate Talks were held from 2 - 6 August in ICLEI member city Bonn (Germany). The UN Climate Conference is to be held in Cancun, Mexico from 29 November to 10 December 2010. ICLEI acts as the Focal Point of Local Government and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency to the UNFCCC since 1995 and coordinates the advocacy work of local governments in the UNFCCC process.
