Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming urban governance, helping cities optimise resources, improve decision-making, and accelerate climate action. With European initiatives like the EU Green Deal, the Artificial Intelligence Act, and the EU Missions for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, the time is now for cities to integrate AI into their strategies. To support public officials in navigating this transition, ICLEI Europe, in partnership with Google.org and the Centre for Public Impact (CPI), is offering a free, interactive AI training programme tailored specifically for cities and regions. This course will provide essential AI knowledge, equipping cities to make data-driven decisions for sustainability and climate resilience.
AI for cities: Why join?
This four-week training is designed for public officials looking to harness AI for smarter, more sustainable urban governance. Combining self-paced study with interactive workshops, the program offers a flexible yet immersive learning experience. Participants will engage with the Elements of AI course, co-created with the University of Helsinki, and apply AI concepts to real-world city challenges.
ICLEI Members in particular get exclsuive benefits, including:
- Priority access: ICLEI Members receive priority to select training dates and may be eligible for travel support for in-person events (subject to availability).
- Guaranteed seats: 50% of spots are reserved exclusively for ICLEI Members.
- Exclusive support & follow-up: ICLEI Members will have access to dedicated roundtables to ask questions and discuss the training in depth, along with ongoing support from an ICLEI guide and targeted resources to help apply AI insights locally.
What you’ll learn:
Understanding AI – Grasp the fundamentals of AI, its related fields, and philosophical implications. Learn to separate practical applications from science fiction.
Machine Learning & Neural Networks – Explore AI models, large language models, and machine learning techniques. Gain hands-on experience with AI tools and understand their relevance in urban planning.
AI Implications & Experimentation – Examine AI’s societal impacts, including bias, privacy, and regulation. Conduct AI experiments and develop solutions tailored to city governance.
AI in Public Service – Apply AI to real-world challenges, refine strategies for public sector innovation, and present findings in a final certification workshop.
Through interactive discussions and hands-on exercises, participants will develop practical AI skills, experiment with real use cases, and critically assess AI’s role in policy and planning. By the end of the training, they will be equipped to integrate AI into their city’s strategies, ensuring data-driven decision-making, enhanced sustainability, and climate resilience.
Participants who complete the course will receive a certification and have the opportunity to connect with peers at major European events such as EURESFO in Rotterdam and Water Xchange in Freiburg. Available in multiple languages, this programme strengthens professional expertise and fosters a growing network of AI-driven cities.
