“Don’t throw: save, win”- ICLEI Europe’s newest Member leads the way towards a more circular economy

Turkish municipality of Muratpaşa lives by the award-winning motto “Don’t throw: save, win”. In orther words, Muratpaşa has quite the track record in zero-waste initiatives. This newest ICLEI Europe Member pairs a focus on zero-waste with an overarching cadre of climate programmes and initiatives, including regular trainings on recycling for school children, thereby raising future generations to be environmentally-aware.

Muratpaşa and its surrounding region of Antalya are home to more than a half-million resident, and known for their mild climate, rich cultural history and stunning coastline.

This year, Muratpaşa Municipality is turning its attention to creating a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP), which aims to contribute to local adaptation to climate change. The action plan will contain concrete steps to develop and implement solution proposals, which will begin with risk and vulnerability analyses.

Muratpaşa Municipality believes firmly in the power of local governments to work together towards environmental goals. On the subject, Ümit Uysal, Mayor of Muratpaşa says, “Now is the time for individuals, institutions and organisations, local and general administrations to take a very serious attitude. It's time to do what we're going to do together…We have to take a serious environmentalist stance and push forth planned actions for direct results. All public administrations, all of us, must act together.”
