Community-led district regeneration in Malmö

A new video highlights the exemplary example set by ICLEI Member Malmö (Sweden) in district regeneration. In a matter of only a few decades, the city has reinvented itself, transforming from a struggling post-industrial municipality to an eco-friendly, multi-cultural and knowledge-based city. Such a transition was possible through engaging citizens and seeing local communities as a resource.

The video explores Malmö's approach to district regeneration, and highlights key take-aways based on their experiences.

The footage was shot in June 2019, when the cities of Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Cambridge (United Kingdom), Essen (Germany), Lille (France) and Jelgava (Latvia) visited Malmö to learn from their work.

Study visit participants explored Malmö’s district regeneration programme in the neighborhoods of Augustenborg and Lindängen. This was "inspiring" to Jo Dicks, Environmental Quality & Growth Manager at City of Cambridge, who reflected, “I think the most impressive thing is the actual level of engagement of the “client”, if you like, of the people living in these areas, the people that are living in this housing, I think this is something I have not seen anywhere else.”

The study visit and video have been produced by the SMARTEES project, which focuses on energy transitions and local social innovation.
