New ICLEI governing bodies elected

As of 16 November 2020, a new ICLEI Council was established, with local leaders elected to each ICLEI region's governing board.

As a membership association, ICLEI receives its mandate from its local governments and municipal organisations. We work closely with our Members, not only in terms of project implementation, but also to govern the organisation. Globally, ICLEI has nine Regional Executive Committees (REXComs), each elected by the ICLEI Members of that specific region. All REXComs together form the ICLEI Council.

By a majority vote, for the 2021-2024 period, the European Regional Executive Committee will be made up of 12 members: five members that are also part of the global ICLEI Council and seven additional members with a solely regional mandate.

These are:

  • Mayor Minna Arve (Turku, Finland)
  • Lord Mayor Martin Horn (Freiburg, Germany)
  • Deputy Mayor Ana Oregi (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain)
  • Deputy Mayor Mariusz Skiba (Katowice, Poland)
  • Mayor Erion Veliaj (Tirana, Albania)

As well as the following members, who will hold a solely European mandate:

  • Vice-Mayor Arno Bonte (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)
  • Member of the City Council Lasse Frimand Jensen (Aalborg, Denmark)
  • Deputy Lord Mayor Cheryl Jones Fur (Växjö, Sweden)
  • Vice-Mayor Tom Meeuws (Antwerp, Belgium)
  • Deputy Mayor Jaakko Stenhäll (Tampere, Finland)
  • Deputy Mayor Harriët Tiemens (Nijmegen, The Netherlands)
  • Deputy Mayor Adam Zawada (Wrocław, Poland)

All ICLEI eligible Members worldwide were invited to participate and elect their regional ICLEI representation. We extend congratulations to all newly elected and re-elected representatives of the 2021-2024 REXCom, and we look forward to working with you.

As ICLEI Secretary General Gino Van Begin puts it, "ICLEI prides itself on being driven by its global network of Members."
