Nijmegen wins green destinations gold award

ICLEI Member Nijmegen (The Netherlands) was recently awarded the much-coveted Green Destinations Gold Award during the Global Green Destinations Day. The ceremony was also hosted by Nijmegen, which is the current European Green Capital.

Nijmegen scored highly for their work related to nature, ecolabels, customer reviews, collaboration between the municipality and the tourism industry, and their work in involving residents in sustainability.

Green Destinations is a non-profit organisation for sustainable tourism, leading a global partnership of expert organisations, companies, and academic institutions. They reward cities and town for making their communities sustainable tourist destinations.

Speaking about the work Nijmegen has done, Green Destinations President, Albert Salman said: “Nijmegen has shown impressive results on climate adaptation, greening their city and involving stakeholders in the process. Additionally, they have ambitious plans for the future.”
