Extended deadline for municipalities to apply for the German Sustainability Award

Accounting for current global uncertainty, the application deadling for German cities and municipalities to apply for the 13th German Sustainability Award has been extended.

This is the national award for excellence in sustainability, which rewards the sustainability efforts and achievements of German cities and municipalities across three categories: small-sized cities, medium-sized cities, and large-sized cities.

Alongside the title of Germany’s most sustainable city, the winner in each category will also receive €30,000 from the Allianz Environmental Foundation to help further their sustainability work.

The new application deadline is 10 May 2020. After an initial evaluation of applications by the German Institute for Urban Affairs (Difu), ICLEI and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, the best applicants will be shortlisted and visited by jury members, who will conduct in-depth interviews.

ICLEI Members have been prominent among past winners. Overall, 57 percent of past winners in the “large city” category are ICLEI Members.
