Applications open for German municipal partnership award

The National German Sustainability Award (Deutsche Nachhaltigkeitpreis) is accepting applications for their Municipal Partnerships award.

This award recognises municipalities in Germany and in the “Global South” that have shown a commitment to using international municipal partnerships to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Successful partnerships between municipalities in Germany and the Global South that are ongoing or have concluded within the last 12 months are eligible to apply. Partnerships should include concrete measures to implement one or more of the SDGs, and should have an impact on sustainability.

Last year’s winners were the City of Wernigerode (Germany) and the City of Hoi An (Vietnam). The municipalities participate in regular exchanges in various fields, and have developed a joint action programme – focused on renewable energy and waste – through the “Municipal Climate Partnerships” project.

Municipal Partnerships are invited to submit their work to the competition for a chance to win the €60,000 prize. Applications can be submitted until 16 August. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 22 November in Düsseldorf (Germany). ICLEI – alongside the Wuppertal Institute and the German Development Institute – will sit on the jury.

The Municipal Partnerships award is co-organised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Service Agency Communities in One World (SKEW).
