ICLEI welcomes newest member: Munich

The City of Munich (Germany) has joined ICLEI.

Munich is the third-largest city in Germany and the capital of the State of Bavaria. In 2019, the city set the ambitious goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2035. Since April 2022, the city has been a participant in the European Commission’s ‘100 EU climate-neutral and smart cities’ initiative and is a Green City Accord signatory.

The City of Munich has shown interest in learning from other cities and stakeholders to find ways of developing and implementing effective sustainability management, including an overarching sustainability strategy. As such, Munich will be right at home in our global network of 2.500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development.

"We are glad to welcome Munich’s vision for a sustainable future into our network. A livable, vibrant, and ambitious city, Munich aims to become climate-neutral by 2035 and even to have a climate-neutral city administration by 2030! We look forward to building on - and expanding - our work on nature-based solutions and mobility projects and accompanying your journey as one of the 100 EU 'Climate-neutral and Smart Cities'. Our hope is that you will be successful on your way and inspire many other cities," adds Holger Robrecht, Deputy Regional Director at ICLEI.
