ICLEI connects local and regional governments with solution providers; pilots technological, organisational and financial innovations; and facilitates knowledge exchange through a range of conferences and workshops. Part of these are conference series, taking place regularly targeting European local governments and relevant stakeholders.
Every three years, ICLEI holds its World Congress to showcase how local and regional governments across our network are advancing sustainable urban development worldwide. The ICLEI World Congress connects them with their peers and strategic partners, and provides a platform for discussions that will inform and enhance their work.

Driving local action for renewable energy and sustainable development.
Since 2007, the Local Renewables Conference series – co-organised by ICLEI Europe and the City of Freiburg (Germany) – has offered an international forum for discussion and exchange among policymakers, energy experts, service providers, researchers, and business representatives.
Each edition explores a specific theme related to renewable energy and resource efficiency, highlighting innovative solutions and strategies that enable cities and regions to advance renewable energy, improve resource efficiency, and foster circular, low-carbon development. The series builds on Freiburg’s long-standing reputation as a “Green City” and brings together diverse stakeholders to accelerate sustainable urban transformation. Recent editions have also included the wider region, with support of the City of Basel (Switzerland) and the Lörrach (Germany).
