ICLEI Members prove that nature-based solutions are a safe and sound investment

Nature-based solutions are a quick and cost-effective way to transform our surroundings to become more sustainable and they will be a key element in building more resilient and healthy societies. A new report on ‘Investing in a Green Urban Future’ demonstrates that these solutions are a safe and sound investment, through case studies from ICLEI Members Bologna (Italy), Glasgow (the United Kingdom), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Hamburg (Germany).

The environmental impacts of urban areas can be dire – cities account for 75 percent of resource use, and are among those most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Nature-based solutions can offer a path to help build resilience and mitigate negative environmental impacts of cities.

The report uses case studies to showcase innovative and functional financing mechanisms for implementing nature-based solutions. The case studies vary from increasing the value of real estate and land, to improving public health and decreasing health care costs, to marketing. Further, the report covers various financing mechanisms and instruments that can be utilised to implement nature-based solutions.

Learn how you can introduce green roofs, green gardens, trees to inner city areas, and capture storm water in your city. Explore the 'Investing in a Green Urban Future' report for more.

This report was launched by the Nature^Squared project, and featured on NetworkNature, an ICLEI-coordinated project aiming to maximise the impact of nature-based solutions. Visit the NetworkNature website to access a diverse catalogue of nature-based solutions resources.
