Join the Stocktake4ClimateEmergency

The most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) made it clear that our collective efforts to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5ºC would not be enough if we do not take unprecedented action. This year’s UNFCCC Global Stocktake, which aims to take stock of the collective progress made so far to achieve Paris Agreement goals, is a key opportunity to show leadership and action of cities, towns and regions.

Local and regional authorities play a key role in implementing the Paris Agreement objectives and ensuring that national governments reach their goals. To date, more than 60 countries have already used multilevel collaboration to increase their climate ambition ahead of COP26 in 2021, compared to their initial NDCs under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Ahead of COP28, cities, towns and regions can contribute to the Global Stocktake through organising its “local version” to discuss some of the key issues for cities such as the Urban component of NDCs, local commitments to 2030-2050, and climate justice. As the UNFCCC focal point of the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities Constituency (LGMA), ICLEI is supporting the Stocktake4ClimateEmergency initiative!

Visit the Stocktake4ClimateEmergency page to download the participation guide and to register your event. A collective assessment of Stocktake4ClimateEmergency will be shared with UNFCCC ahead of the COP28. To learn more about hosting a local stocktake, ICLEI will be hosting a webinar on 12 September, 15:00 CEST, as part of Daring Cities 2023 on "How to host a Mini-COP in your Townhall: Localizing the Global Stocktake". The webinar will focus on sharing practical information on how to host a local stocktake. Register here.
