The demand for nature-based solutions (NbS) experts and environmental professionals is rising as cities and regions tackle the challenges of climate change and transition toward a climate-neutral economy. To achieve this transformation, it is crucial to prioritise youth inclusion in nature-based solutions education, empowering the next generation to lead the way.
ICLEI Members can contribute to a youth inclusion survey, which explores the current level of youth participation in activities organised by local governments related to NbS and social-ecological issues, as well as strategies and approaches local governments can adopt to better engage youth in NbS-related work. The collected input will be essential to shaping youth-focused initiatives that inspire and equip young people aged 14 and over to become active participants in creating sustainable and resilient communities.
The insights gathered will inform the development of a Youth Inclusion Toolkit, an innovative resource designed to engage young people and communities. Drawing on the experience of NBS EduWORLD demonstrators in France, Ireland and Portugal, as well as co-creation processes with youth, the toolkit will include tailored materials and approaches created with direct input from young participants. The Toolkit will be tested with local government representatives, educators, and experts from across Europe in an online workshop on 18 February.
The survey is prepared by the Horizon Europe project NBS EduWORLD, of which ICLEI is a partner. This work builds on ICLEI’s vision of youth engagement in global climate action, aiming to support local and regional governments in unlocking the creative potential of youth. As part of ICLEI’s Strategic goals of bridging topics such as biodiversity, climate adaptation, and education.
