Local governments across Europe play a vital role in protecting, conserving, and promoting cultural heritage. Now, an exciting opportunity for municipalities and local authorities to gain European-wide recognition for their efforts.
Launched by the European Commission and run by Europa Nostra, the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2025 recognise exceptional achievements in cultural heritage across five categories:
- Conservation & Adaptive Reuse
- Research
- Education, Training & Skills
- Citizen Engagement & Awareness-raising
- Heritage Champions
For local governments, winning an award can deliver numerous benefits, including heightened (inter)national exposure and increased visitor to heritage sites. It can also lead to potential follow-on funding for further heritage initiatives.
Why should local governments apply?
- Recognition: Gain visibility at the European level, boosting your city's or region's reputation for protecting and promoting cultural heritage.
- Monetary prizes: A Grand Prix of €10,000 and a Public Choice Award of an additional €10,000 are on offer to support your heritage work.
- Networking: Connect with a diverse network of heritage professionals, experts, and enthusiasts across Europe, opening the door to collaborative projects and shared knowledge.
This is a unique chance to shine a spotlight on your community’s contributions to heritage conservation and raise awareness of your efforts on the European stage. Europa Nostra is the largest heritage network in Europe and coordinates the European Heritage Hub, of which ICLEI Europe is a partner.
