Public procurement for a responsible recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic

Explore and share a new ‘Call to Action’, which outlines nine actions for the global public procurement community to leverage their purchasing power to respond to and recover responsibly from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The One Planet Network Sustainable Public Procurement programme – a partnership co-led by ICLEI, UN Environment, the Environmental Development Centre of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands – has published a call for the global public procurement community to leverage purchasing power to respond to and recover responsibly from the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the programme has proposed nine concrete actions for the public procurement community, outlined in a “Call to Action”.

Humanity is faced with a challenge unprecedented in recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted countless lives worldwide, leaving a lasting impact on individuals, world economies, and on society as a whole.

Public procurement must be seized as a key tool for responsible response and recovery mechanisms. Making responsible and strategic decisions on how public money is spent can be pivotal to generating economic, societal and environmental value.

Different sectors face distinct challenges, and unique opportunities to contribute to responsible recovery. For this reason, the Sustainable Public Procurement programme has also collated suggested actions across a selection of high-impact sectors, including health care, construction, textiles, plastic and more.

This is a joint effort by the SPP Programme's co-leads, as well as 16 Multistakeholder Advisory Committee members from across the world.
