ICLEI welcomes nine Ukrainian cities as new members

As with other regions in conflict, implementing sustainable urban development poses an added challenge in Ukraine. Thus, ICLEI aims to support the recovery and long-term rebuilding of the cities and towns in the region in a resilient and sustainable way, welcoming nine Ukrainian Members into our network:Kremenchuk City Council, Boyarka City Council, Sursko-Litovskoe Municipality, Horishni Plavni City Council, Shostka City Council, Korosten City Council, Mykolaiv City Council and Ostroh City Council.

To aid in this work, ICLEI recently joined another EU initiative: the European Alliance of Cities and Regions for the Reconstruction of Ukraine. By taking part, we will exchange expertise in capacity-building, good governance, and technical assistance with the new Ukrainian Members.

Moreover, we welcome these new Members following the recent publication of the "Local Green Deals: A Blueprint for Action" initiative in Ukraine. This ICLEI-led paper, published under the European Commission's Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC), promotes green and digital transformation at the local level across a network of 80 different cities.

Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych - the only Ukrainian Mayor elected to the board of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) during the COP28 World Climate Summit - adds: "It is a great honour to be among the motivated leaders who strive to build a more sustainable society and improve the quality of life of communities around the world. And I am ready to share my knowledge and unique experience and work together to accelerate climate and energy progress for a greener and healthier future."
