Record number of ICLEI Members recognised as climate leaders on CDP’s 2024 Cities A List

A record number of ICLEI Member cities have been recognised for their ambitious climate action, earning a place on the 2024 Cities A List published by CDP. The annual list highlights cities from around the world that are demonstrating leadership in environmental transparency and performance.

CDP’s Cities A List is compiled from self-reported data submitted via the CDP–ICLEI Track – the world’s leading climate reporting platform for local governments. In 2024, 973 cities reported climate data through this platform, of which 752 were scored. From those, 112 cities earned the top grade of ‘A’. In Europe, 48 cities have made it to the list.

To achieve this grade, cities must meet several criteria, including having a city-wide emissions inventory, a published climate action plan, science-aligned emissions reduction targets, a completed climate risk and vulnerability assessment, and an adaptation goal.
Among this year’s A List cities in Europe 19 ICLEI Members – the highest number yet. These cities were recognised for their comprehensive and transparent approach to tackling climate change. Our members included in the list are: Copenhagen, Turku, Vanta, Paris, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Florence, Rotterdam, Oslo, Guimarães, Lisbon, Matosinhos, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Malmö, Stockholm, Belfast, Glasgow, and Hammersmith and Fulham London Borough Council.

Europe remains a stronghold of local climate leadership; Europe came out on top for forests, having the most A List companies in 2024 in this field. Cities of all sizes have made the A List, demonstrating that meaningful climate action is possible in a wide range of local contexts.

ICLEI Europe continues to support cities through tools like the CDP–ICLEI Track, helping local governments to report data, set science-based targets, and implement integrated climate strategies.

The CDP-ICLEI Track platform, jointly run by ICLEI and CDP, represents a crucial collaboration aimed at continuously supporting cities in advancing their climate and environmental action, reporting, and disclosure. In Europe, ICLEI Europe and CDP work closely together to ensure cities can report their efforts effectively and properly. The CDP-ICLEI Track is one of the official EU platforms for cities to report their climate data, making this invaluable information available to all interested stakeholders worldwide.
