Transformative Action Award 2017: Shortlist revealed: Rewarding Transformative Actions to create productive, sustainable and resilient cities

The Sustainable Cities platform has announced the shortlisted candidates for the Transformative Action Award 2017.

The award, funded by the Basque Country and the City of Aalborg (Denmark), rewards current or concluded Transformative Actions that address the pathways of the Basque Declaration related to three categories: socio-cultural transformation, socio-economic transformation, and technological transformation.

The jury, made up of Cor Lamers (Chair of the ENVE Commission, European Committee of the Regions); Wolfgang Teubner (Regional Director, ICLEI Europe); Arantza Acha (Director, UNESCO-Etxea, Spain) and Thomas Kastrup-Larsen (Mayor of Aalborg, Denmark) announced the following shortlisted candidates:

  • Mannheim, Germany - For making energy and climate measures more visible;
  • Nilüfer, Turkey - For using neighbourhood committees to increase civic engagement;
  • Udaltalde 21, Nerbioi-Ibaizabal, Spain - For joining forces for a common sustainability agenda in neighbouring municipalities; and
  • Zaragoza, Spain - For turning citizens into “city makers”, through putting their ideas into action.

The award ceremony will take place on 22 November 2017 at the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Rue Belliard 99-101, 1040 Brussels, Belgium. In attendance will be representatives of the ENVE Commission and the shortlisted candidates. The winning candidate will be rewarded with:

  • A trophy and the right to be called “Transformative Action of the year 2017”;
  • A promotional video;
  • Free entry and a presentation at the next European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns, scheduled to take place in 2019; and
  • A showcase on the Sustainable Cities Platform.

Speaking about the importance of the Transformative Action Award, Arantza Acha, Director UNESCO Etxea, Spain said: “The Transformative Action Award showcases bold and innovative examples of how to transform our societies to achieve multidimensional sustainability in line with the Basque Declaration.” The Mayor of Aalborg, Thomas Kastrup-Larsen also described The Transformative Actions Award as “a fantastic way of highlighting exemplary approaches to sustainability issues. All submissions showed truly inspiring solutions to the challenges we are facing and I urge everyone to study them closer”.
