Digital technologies in combination with urban infrastructures and management systems represent an unprecedented opportunity for towns and cities to use their resources more effectively, thereby becoming ‘smart cities’.
Developing smart cities and districts entails a cooperative approach: involving citizens is central to this as new smart solutions impact on their lives. Making the data generated by such projects openly accessible is also crucial, as doing so brings transparency to decision making and empowers citizens to shape their areas.
ICLEI works with local governments and stakeholders from various sectors to share and replicate smart solutions being developed. In addition, experienced-based advocacy and engagement in international standardisation for smart and sustainable cities help to spread a sustainability oriented model of smart cities across Europe.
