Mayors Adapt Signature Ceremony

16 October 2014
Brussels, Belgium

EU cities who have signed up to Mayors Adapt are invited to join EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard at the first Mayors Adapt Signature Ceremony in Brussels on 16 October 2014.

Mayors Adapt is a new Covenant of Mayors' initiative on adaptation to climate change. It is open to all EU cities, making it the first pan-European movement to support local action on climate change adaptation. Signatories will receive technical support from a dedicated helpdesk, the opportunity to link up with other cities to share advice and ideas, and visibility for their climate change adaptation actions.

As well as celebrating the leadership of cities who have signed up to Mayors Adapt, the ceremony will provide an opportunity for local representatives to learn from their counterparts about their challenges when addressing climate change, find out more about the solutions they have worked on so far, and showcase their work to colleagues around Europe.

Support with travel costs will be available for a limited number of Signature Ceremony participants. These funds will be allocated to ensure that a diverse range of cities are able to attend.

There are also prospects for financing local climate change adaptation actions. At the launch event, Commissioner Hedegaard announced that the first call for proposals under the new LIFE programme will encourage urban adaptation projects, in particular those linked to Mayors Adapt.

This call will be launched later in 2014.
