Launch of Focus Group on Smart Heating and Cooling

1 December 2023, 11:00 - 12:00
- Online

On behalf of the European Commission’s Smart Cities Marketplace, Euroheat & Power, ICLEI Europe and the RHC-ETIP Platform are launching a Focus Group on the topic of ‘Renewable Heating and Cooling’ in Smart Cities. Parties interested in contrbuting can register to attend the launch meeting on 1 December.

The launch meeting will bring together a group of committed experts from cities and organisations from across Europe, for a frank exchange seeking to bundle key learnings needed for the European rollout of smart thermal energy solutions to accelerate.

Globally, heating and cooling accounts for approximately half of all energy consumption. The majority of heating and cooling is still generated from fossil fuels. In order to fulfil the EU’s climate and energy goals, the heating and cooling sector must rapidly decarbonise.

Renewable heating and cooling technologies are safe, clean, efficient and increasingly cost-competitive. Solar thermal, geothermal, bioenergy and ambient and excess heat recovery can be used to supply heat to both buildings and industry via efficient district heating and cooling networks or as stand-alone solutions. These thermal energy sources, complemented with renewable electricity, are the backbone of a radically new, user oriented, carbon-neutral, efficient, reliable, and flexible energy system.

Specifically, the new Focus group will organise a limited number of online meetings, where cities and stakeholders working on the field of H&C can exchange and synergise based on their experiences.

The final output of the group will be the production of a new Solution Booklet for practitioners and project developers. Specific webinars for a wider group of interested players will also be discussed.

The kick-off meeting takes place on 1 December, 11:00-12:00 CET. Registration closes at 17.00 on 30 November.
