Edinburgh Process Thematic Webinar: Our Solutions are in Nature

Nature-based Solutions for Biodiversity Action

22 May 2020
Online- Zoom

ICLEI Europe’s contribution to the "Edinburgh Process for Subnational and Local Governments on the development of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework" will include hosting a webinar on the interdependence of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) and Biodiversity, to take place on Friday, 22 May 2020.

The session "Our Solutions are in Nature - Nature-based Solutions for Biodiversity Action" will discuss the role of NBS in providing habitats for biodiversity, helping tackle socio-environmental challenges but also the importance of biodiversity for proper NBS functioning and resilience. Confirmed speakers include representatives of subnational and city governments and academia.

Specific topics of the discussion include the role of subnational governments in implementing NBS, rural NBS for ecosystem restoration, capacity building and how to assess biodiversity indicators of current urban NBS. Contributions to this session may inform subsequent responses made by participants into the subnational consultation.

Nature-based interventions are considered an important contribution to sustainable development due to their carbon sink effect, disaster risk reduction potential and benefits to human health and well-being. NBS have also been recognized as a central tool for biodiversity actions and to enhance and restore ecosystems, for instance, in the Sharm El-Sheikh Communiqué for Local and Subnational Action for Nature and People at the 14th Conference of the Parties of the CBD.
