The Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12), convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), will take place in Cairo (Egypt) from 4 - 8 November 2024. WUF12 will focus on localising the Sustainable Development Goals, shedding light on the local actions and initiatives required to curb the current global challenges affecting the daily life of people, including unaffordable housing, rising living costs, climate change, the lack of basic services, and ongoing conflicts.

Bridging the Gap - Unlocking Finance for Local Climate Projects

By addressing the gap in climate finance, this session seeks to empower local governments to take bold action on climate change and contribute to a more sustainable future. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about successful strategies for accessing climate finance, network with potential partners, and advocate for policies that support local climate action. ICLEI, a leading global network of local governments committed to sustainable urban development, is contributing to this session to raise awareness in addressing the critical issue of accessing climate finance for local governments.
Unlocking the potential of local data to foster sustainable and livable cities

This event aims to facilitate the sharing of innovative data tools, best practices and innovative strategies among cities, regions and international organisations for integrating quantitative evidence and SDG-relevant indicators into local policy making. It will build on the expertise of panelists from international organisations including the OECD, the European Commission and UCLG, and provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss the development and implementation of context-specific metrics that will enhance the ability to monitor and accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda.
Innovative financial mechanisms to support the transformation of urban agrifood systems

This event aims to identify innovative financial mechanisms to ensure that urban agrifood systems are integrated into the urban development agenda. Strategic entry points will be identified to connect a global urban agrifood systems agenda to the urban development agenda. The event will build on the momentum generated by the Urban Agrifood Systems Global Workshop – co-organised by FAO and ICLEI and hosted by FAO in September 2024 in Rome. The event will draw upon the outcomes of the global workshop.
Monitoring urban fabric for data-driven planning and decision-making

The event offers attendees the opportunity to be part of the EuroFab project, gathering their perspectives on how Earth Observation and AI can substantially change the way urban fabric data is produced and made available for monitoring and what is its relevance and applicability in evidence-based urban and regional planning and policy. ICLEI Europe's Bard Rama will take part in the panel and will introduce different perspectives on data production and use, from local authorities to international organisations and research institutions.
G7 economies shaping urban futures

How can G7 economies help solve the challenges faced by cities across the world? The G7 Sustainable Urban Development Group, established during the G7 German Presidency in 2022, aims to unite experts and practitioners from urban development ministries of G7 economies to discuss priorities and possible solutions to global issues and their impacts on cities. By providing a global platform for debate and exchange between G7 members, leaders in sustainable urbanisation, and the rest of the world, this WUF Special Session will set the bases for further political commitments and actions for national and local sustainable, resilient and inclusive development.
Building Climate Resilience for Urban Communities - Localization of Resilience Assessment for sustainable, affordable, and inclusive development

Aligned with the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) theme “It All Starts at Home”, we welcome all members to join us at our side event which is aimed at enhancing climate resilience in communities through comprehensive participatory approach and global partnerships. This event will take place in person and share experiences from cities joining the Z-Zurich Foundation Urban Climate Resilience Program (UCRP) together with key partners: Resilient Cities Network Stichting and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, to help shed light on the the significance of local representatives and leaders' role (formal/informal) as key stakeholders in urban transformation and climate resilience efforts, and the key actions required to co-design,plan, develop, and deliver customised solutions which enable communities to build resilience, and harness their potential as catalysts for positive change at the local level.
