WEBINAR SERIES | From Agreement to Action

Sharing experiences for capacity building: presenting policy tools, guidelines, instruments, and programmes that facilitate subnational and local action on biodiversity

14 December 2023, 17:00 - 18:30
- Online

ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Centre (CBC), will host and lead a series of five webinars, with the support from partners: United Nations Environment Programme, Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, International Union for Conservation of Nature, Regions4 and the European Committee of the Regions, to explore the key role of subnational and local governments in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Considering the role of subnational and local governments was a “game changer” at COP15 in December 2022, it is important to keep momentum while focusing on strategies for the implementation of the GBF as we start preparing for the COP16 taking place in 2024.

The implementation of GBF requires a collaboration process between CBD Parties, subnational and local governments, international organizations, and society as a whole to unleash, strengthen, create, adapt and maintain the ability to manage challenges over time.

Several decisions and outcomes of COP15 have demonstrated that subnational and local governments are crucial actors to make tangible contributions to nature conservation and biodiversity management globally. Therefore it is important to invest resources in providing them the necessary tools.

This session is focused on “building capacity” to enhance the knowledge and skills of local governments. Several institutions which are key leaders on biodiversity policy will present initiatives to scale out the action of the GBF.
