ICLEI is calling European cities and local authorities interested in learning how to turn bio-waste into value-added products. If this describes you, apply by 29 October 2021 to take part in a "City Interest Group", part of the EU-funded project CIRCULAR BIOCARBON.

Five to ten cities or local authorities will be selected to be part of the City Interest Group. They will be able to closely follow pilot activities and benefit from technical expertise throughfunded study visits, peer-to-peer exchanges, replication and training workshops, and webinars focused on turning bio-waste into high added-value products.

City Interest Group members will have the opportunity to gain insider knowledge on breakthrough innovations and receive expert advice in the field of biowaste valorisation; keep up-to-date on research, development and regulation in the areas of circular economy and bio-based products and services; build long-lasting relationships; and help build momentum towards achieving circular economy in Europe.

This work is being done in the context of the CIRCULAR BIOCARBON project. ICLEI supports the project, which is engaging local governments in circular economy intiatives across Europe, with the overarching objective of opening up new business frameworks based on a circular vision of waste treatment in a city. The project engages actors leading territorial waste management schemes and policies to maximise impact on markets, policy makers, and society.

This European-funded project is developing a first-of-its kind biorefinery, designed to turn the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) and sewage sludge (SS) into added-value products, including mechanical moving parts, night vision cameras, and devices for 5G telecommunications. The biorefinery will be implemented in two locations: in ICLEI Member Zaragoza (Spain) and in the city of Sesto San Giovanni (Italy).

This cutting-edge biorefinery is one of a pool of technologies being explored and implemented to help treat all the bio-waste produced by a medium-sized city.
