Cities seek to bolster bioeconomy through open dialogue

Bioeconomy is focused on reducing dependency on limited fossil-based resources and ensuring healthy and secure food production and supply.

Through promoting the sustainable production of renewable resources from land, fisheries and aquaculture, and their conversion into biobased products and bioenergy, bioeconomy hopes to tackle the key environmental, societal and economic challenges the world is currently facing.

Public authorities have the potential to play a crucial role in this move toward a more circular biobased economy; public spending on purchases in the European Union amounts to approximately 19 percent of GDP, thus presenting a substantial force when steered towards sustainable biobased procurement.

However, the success of bioeconomy depends on the active collaboration of a broad range of stakeholders, including public authorities and procurers, industry players, researchers and civil society.

To help promote this collaboration, the BIOVOICES project seeks to promote dialogue between local governments as well as research and industry actors, through a platform that enables the sharing of good examples and strengthens joint efforts to solve common challenges.
