In the face of increasingly extreme weather events and trends, cities are stepping up their ambitions to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

The RESIN project, which draws to an end this month, has developed practical and applicable tools to support cities in assessing vulnerability and risk assessment, and in designing and implementing climate adaptation strategies for their local contexts, with an emphasis on resilient infrastructure. A city’s green and blue infrastructure is itself a significant asset to support urban resilience.

The project ENABLE (2017-2019) explores how to design and implement green and blue space networks in such a way as to deliver numerous social and environmental benefits for more resilient cities. The project emphasises ways to ensure equitable distribution of these multiple benefits, adopting a social and environmental justice perspective.

The RESIN final conference (a side event of the EU Week of Regions and Cities), taking place on Tuesday 9 October in Brussels (Belgium), will focus on the experiences of the RESIN cities as users of the tools and methodologies that the project has produced.

The ENABLE stakeholder dialogue, also a side event to the EU Week of Regions and Cities, taking place on Thursday 11 October in Brussels, will bring together ICLEI member Stockholm (Sweden), Lodz (Poland), member of the European Regional Executive Committee and ICLEI member Wroclaw (Poland) and the Metropolitan Region of Bologna (Italy) with ENABLE research partners. At the event these speakers will share their cities’ strategies, plans and experiences in working with urban green and blue spaces and discuss ways to ensure both the societal and environmental perspectives are taken into consideration during the planning process.
