EC Launches public consultation on urban waste water treatment directive

The European Commission (EC) are inviting citizens, organisations, cities and relevant stakeholders to share their views on how the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive has affected urban water collection and treatment across the European Union (EU).

The Urban Waste Water Treatment directive was created with the aim to protect the environment from adverse effects of waste water discharges from urban areas and certain industrial sectors.

The recently launched consultation, which is taking place in parallel with the fitness check on the water framework directive, will assess the effectiveness, efficiency, coherence, relevance and EU added value of the Directive since its entry into force 25 years ago.

Through the consultation the EC hopes to gather general views from the public on their understanding and relation with water and waste water and on the other hand to gather more detailed information and opinions from experts and public and private entities in charge of implementation on the specificities of the directive.

The consultation was launched on 13 July and the online survey will remain open until 19 October.
