ICLEI Europe is a partner of this year’s European Week of Regions and Cites (EWRC) and will organise several activities dedicated to sustainability and resilience in regions and cities throughout the week in Brussels (Belgium), 8-11 October.
The EWRC is co-organised by the European Committee of the Regions and DG REGIO and is an annual four day event welcoming more than 6,000 local, regional, national and European decision-makers, officials and experts to participate in around 100 workshops, exhibitions and networking sessions showcasing innovation and best-practices in European cities and regions.
On Tuesday, 9 October 2018, ICLEI is organising the conference “Climate Resilient Cities and Infrastructures 2018”. The cities of Bratislava (Slovakia), Bilbao (Spain), Paris (France) and Greater Manchester (UK) will share new tools and methods they have co-created for adapting to climate change at the local level. A closing panel including the European Environment Agency, UN-Habitat and the University of Oxford will discuss how cooperation can build long-term resilience in Europe.
The conference is the final event of the European-funded RESIN project and is co-organised by the RESCCUE project. Participation is free of charge and registration closes on 2 October. Detailed information and online registration is available here.
On Wednesday 10 October, 09:30-11:00 (CET), ICLEI will moderate a strategic dialogue and a networking session on "Heat Synergy Regions as driver of integrated territorial development" in conjunction with the Heat Roadmap Europe energy project as part of the official programme of the EWRC.
The strategic panel will focus on financing and framework conditions for establishing Heat Synergy Regions (HSR) as one of the most cost-efficient sub-national pathways for decarbonising heating and cooling (H&C).
In addition, a networking lunch will be held after the session to provide participants with the opportunity for further discussions. The networking will take place from 11:00-12:00 (CET) and is open to all registered participants of the EWRC.

On Thursday, 11 October, 09:30-13:00 (CET) the 1st ENABLE Stakeholder Dialogue “Environmentally and socially just and resilient cities – What can blue and green infrastructure offer?” will provide an opportunity to share experiences on embedding green and blue infrastructure in urban planning and development and ensuring equitable distribution of the multiple benefits.
In this Stakeholder Dialogue, discussions will focus particularly on how cities can benefit from an environmental as well as societal perspective by creating and improving urban green and blue spaces and feature examples from ENABLE case study cities.
The event also provides the unique opportunity for other cities – following an application process for the speaking slots, open until 19 September – to share their stories on municipal plans and activities on the topic.
