Ghent wins UN climate action award

ICLEI Member Ghent (Belgium) made headlines recently, when they, alongside 14 other groundbreaking projects from around the world, were announced as winners of the 2019 United Nations Global Climate Action Award.

The winning projects were selected from a pool of over 670 applications, and shine a light on some of the most practical examples of what people around the world are doing to combat climate change.

“Announced amongst the backdrop of nations signalling their renewed determination to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, these awards shine a light on 15 incredible examples of scalable climate action around the world,” said Niclas Svenningsen, Manager of the UN Climate Change Global Climate Action Programme.

Ghent secured the award for their food procurement project ‘Gent en Garde’, which aims to shorten food supply chains, increase sustainability in food production and consumption, improving access to food, and decreasing food waste. This is accomplished using a participatory governance model. Ghent en Garde also gained the City recognition through winning the 2018 Transformative Action Award.
