Heidelberg, Mannheim and Münster nominated for the German sustainability award

ICLEI Members Heidelberg, Mannheim and Münster (Germany) were recently shortlisted for the German Sustainability award, in the category of ‘Germany’s most sustainable city’.

The German Sustainability Award is the national award for excellence in sustainability, rewarding the achievements of cities and municipalities, businesses and researchers. With over 800 applicants, the prize is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Speaking about the recently shortlisted candidates, Alice Berger, Secretary General of the German Sustainability Award Foundation, said: "The strong field of applicants shows how sustainability has arrived in urban development. International responsibility, a holistic approach and comprehensive citizen participation characterise the top field".

The next stage of the competition will involve in-depth interviews in each of the shortlisted cities. The independent expert jury, under the chairmanship of Professor Günther Bachmann, Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development, will then decide on the winner.

The winner of this year’s award will receive a prize of € 30,000 from the Allianz Environmental Foundation for sustainable urban development projects at an award ceremony scheduled to take place 7 December 2018 in Düsseldorf (Germany).
