ICLEI to advance responsible data collection on Europe’s building stock to support decarbonisation

ICLEI Europe is joining forces with European partners to close the gap of comprehensive data available on Europe’s building stock. Through their efforts, the partners will develop data collection and management processes, which will be made available to support the design of better decarbonisation policies and strategies at all levels – from the European to local levels.

Partners convened online this week for the first time to discuss the development of a structured and standardised data collection and management approach to be integrated into a 'Datahub' via an open and easily accessible web-based platform. The project aims to build upon the European building stock observatory database (BSO) and related analytics to make data flow easier, more resilient and safe.

Based on state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms that are analysing existing European data sets and data from individual data providers, the new platform will be able to design transformation scenarios for existing building stock, which will enhance the capacity of local, national, and EU policymakers to design effective strategies and incentivising frameworks that enable much more rapid progress towards reaching the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal.

These efforts are part of the BuiltHub project, which recently kicked-off. Its Horizon 2020 sister project MATRYCS, kicking off next month, and will also focus on decision-making and data analytics solution for energy-efficient buildings.
