Mobility materials and success stories shared at CIVITAS Forum 2019

This year’s edition of Europe’s landmark urban mobility event, the CIVITAS Forum, unfolded over the course of three days in Graz (Austria).

From 2-4 October, over 650 mobility minds from 45 countries discovered first-hand how a combination of newer, low-emission transport technologies and more traditional cycling, pedestrian, and public transport infrastructure is changing the face of cities across Europe. This combination is helping foster safer, more inclusive and more sustainable mobility.

At the Forum, a landmark document was released that gives cities comprehensive support to make mobility an integral part of their visions to become dynamic, modern, and liveable environments.

Unveiled in the opening plenary, the Guidelines for Developing and Implementing a Sustainble Urban Mobiliy Plan (SUMP) were developed via a one-year consultation process with over 300 people from Europe's SUMP community. These are an update of the first EU SUMP Guidelines released in 2013.

With a fully updated SUMP cycle, more detail on measure planning, financing and implementation, and over 60 new good practice examples, the Guidelines are the ultimate SUMP resource. Read and download here, alongside a series of SUMP-related thematic guides and practitioner briefings.

Furthermore, a series of fact sheets were released in Graz that summarise critical lessons learned from 10 CIVITAS research projects. Covering four thematic areas, they inform mobility practitioners on key regarding measure implementation; fostering the uptake of the measures; business cases; and general evaluation processes.

In addition, the Forum provided a platform for sustainable mobility success stories. The winners of the CIVITAS Awards 2019 were announced: ICLEI Members Antwerp (Belgium), Bremen (Germany) and Stockholm (Sweden), alongside Vinnytsia (Ukraine) were revealed as clean, green transport trailblazers. Find out what won them their prizes here. In addition, a booklet tells the tales of six cities that have transformed themselves through sustainable urban mobility – read it now.
