New technology drives Aalborg closer to carbon neutrality

On 12 June, a unique electric bus was rolled out in ICLEI Member Aalborg (Denmark).

The bus is equipped with innovative technology that allows it to be recharged in just minutes. Its so-called “super capacitator” can be recharged in only six minutes, and contributes to the vehicle being designated CO2-neutral. The electric bus also has the advantage of being quieter than traditional public transit.

The super capacitator was developed by Chinese company Aowei that has a Nordic research and development centre in Aalborg. The city will now be a pilot site for the technology, with a super capacitator-based electric bus set to be in operation for the next six months.

Building on this pilot will be essential, as the city has decided that all its new buses will be CO2-neutral by 2020.
