Newly released guide helps cities prepare for and cope with heatwaves

As the global climate changes, cities around the world are dealing with more intense and frequent heatwaves; this trend is expected to continue to rise. This is especially concerning, as heatwaves are among the deadliest types of natural hazards. But there is good news! Namely, they are predictable, and deaths from heatwaves can be greatly reduced by implementing actions that are simple and affordable.

These actions are a highlight in a newly released Heatwave Guide for Cities. The Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre has collaborated with ICLEI and over 25 others to compile the guide.

The Heatwave Guide for Cities – which includes contributions from various ICLEI regions – is a comprehensive and practical document to assist urban areas. It is written to be used by city government staff, and recommendations are illustrated with specific case study examples. Case studies are drawn from cities in over ten countries, representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The document provides guidance on topics including: understanding and preparing for heat risks; early warning systems; coping during a heatwave; actions after a heatwave; and urban planning that accounts for heat risks. One of the guide’s many recommendations is to connect with other cities through city networks, in order to learn from each other and share experiences.
