Photovoltaic plants for Ferrara

ICLEI member, the Municipality of Ferrara (Italy), is implementing an innovative new project called Photovoltaic for Ferrara. Photovoltaics is a type of solar power where photovoltaic solar panels convert solar radiation into direct current electricity. The project will see the introduction of new photovoltaic plants in various areas in the municipality.

These plants will meet the energy needs of Ferrara and contribute to solving citizen’s energy and environmental problems. A technical team selected the most suitable public areas owned by the Municipality as sites for the plants. Ten areas were selected according to the characteristics of the buildings and/or the type of soil. The project aims to increase the value of unused municipal owned sites, contribute to solving energy and environmental problems and produce clean renewable energy.

Ferrara has issued a call for tenders in order to select the suppliers that will make the project a reality. The contract for the project includes the management, financial supporting, making and maintenance of the photovoltaic plants already selected. These will become the property of the supplier when the contract expires, preventing the Municipality from incurring extra costs. The Municipality of Ferrara wants to create a utility without investing extra funding and the clean energy will be used by the administration itself and other users on the territory.
