Report examines link between transparency and climate finance

The newly released carbonn Cities Climate Registry Report (cCCR) shows a growing number of local and regional governments committed to being transparent and accountable in their climate policies. The cCCR is the world’s largest public database of local climate action, keeping track of measures taken across the globe to mitigate and adapt to climate change. According to its most recent report, 422 local and regional governments from 44 countries are on track to trustworthiness.

Trust and transparency are vital as they help secure financing for local climate actions. According to the cCCR data, local and regional governments have reported about US$ 145 billion (nearly €121 billion) worth of climate investments in the last year. 57 percent of these investments were driven by local governments themselves. A funding gap of approximately US$341 million (€251 million) still needs to be filled to finance the 188 climate mitigation and adaptation actions on the cCCR.

"Trustworthiness, good governance and transparency are key to credit worthiness. By voluntarily reporting to the cCCR, cities and regions not only create momentum for accelerating local climate action, they also demonstrate trustworthiness, accountability, and eligibility for receiving the much needed funds for climate mitigation and adaptation actions” said ICLEI Secretary General Gino Van Begin, speaking at the report’s launch.
